Renting during a tropical storm watch or warning

When a storm is headed our way, new protection plan coverage is put on hold until it passes. You can still rent a unit, but there are a few things you should know first.

When your protection plan starts

You rent

Move-in day

You sign your lease, choose a protection plan, and sign the coverage acknowledgement.

Not covered

Binding restriction in place

The storm watch or warning is active. Any loss to your stored items during this time is not covered, even if your receipt shows a coverage date.

Covered

Restriction lifted

Once the storm passes and the restriction is lifted, your coverage takes effect.

What is a binding restriction?

Storage King USA offers tenant protection through SBOA. When a named tropical storm or hurricane threatens an area, SBOA places a binding restriction on that area. This means new coverage can be sold, but it can't begin until the threat has passed and SBOA lifts the restriction.

This is standard across the insurance industry. It keeps coverage from being purchased only after a storm is already on the way.

If you rent while restrictions are in place

  • Your coverage will not start right away. It begins only after the restriction is lifted.
  • Losses during the restriction are not covered. This includes any storm damage that happens before the restriction ends.
  • Your receipt may show an earlier date. The paid-through dates on your receipt may show coverage starting on your move-in date. Your actual coverage still begins only after the restriction is lifted.
  • You'll be asked to sign an acknowledgement. It confirms you understand when your coverage begins.
  • Access may be limited. The store may close before, during, or after the storm, and gate access may be unavailable until it is safe to reopen.

The coverage acknowledgement

Every new tenant who chooses an SBOA protection plan while a binding restriction is in effect must sign the Acknowledgement of SBOA Tenant Insurance Coverage Effective Date Restriction. You can review it before you rent.

View the acknowledgement form

The form asks for your signature, the date, the name on your lease, your unit number, and the facility name.

Already a Storage King USA customer?

The binding restriction applies to new coverage. If your protection plan was already in effect before the restriction began, it is not affected. For questions about what your plan covers, call your store or refer to your SBOA plan documents.

Common questions

Can I still rent a unit during a storm watch or warning?

Yes. You can rent at any time. Just be aware that your protection plan won't take effect until the restriction is lifted, and access to your unit may be limited while the storm is in the area.

How will I know when the restriction is lifted?

SBOA lifts the restriction once the storm has passed the area. Call your store and a team member can confirm the status for you.

Why does my receipt show coverage dates that already started?

Receipts show the standard paid-through period for your plan. During a binding restriction, the coverage itself starts later, once the restriction ends. The acknowledgement you sign explains this.

Is there another way to protect my things in the meantime?

Some homeowners and renters insurance policies cover belongings stored away from home. Check with your insurance agent to see what your policy includes.

The store is closed. How do I get help?

Call your store's main number. You'll be connected with a remote team member who has the latest information for that location.

Your safety comes first

Please don't travel to the property during a storm or while an evacuation order is in effect. We'll reopen as soon as it's safe, and our team is available by phone throughout.
